Overview

STiLUS was designed as a personal wardrobe assistant for fashion-focused individuals. The application assists in making wardrobe maintenance a less daunting process by offering a categorized digital inventory, outfit-builder, and clean-up tool.

You’ve just gotten out of work, and in a couple of hours you will head out to meet up with some old friends. It’s been quite a while and you are excited to impress these friends with how much you’ve accomplished and grown since you’ve last seen each other.

You take some time to relax after work, maybe take a shower, and then it’s time to throw on a new outfit and head out.

Getting dressed is usually not much of an issue for you, but today, nothing seems to be working. Each item you try on seems to conflict with one another, and when you finally think of something that may work, you’re unable to locate it. Maybe it’s the extra stress of meeting with old friends, or maybe it’s the time limit. Either way, by the time you’ve found an outfit that you’re okay with, your room is a mess and you’re running late.

Problem

Let’s revisit the initial scenario, this time with the STiLUS app.

With STiLUS, you’d be able to:

-Plan your outfit (or create multiple options) ahead.

-Know where your item is based off of your inventory organization.

-Avoid sorting through piles of unwanted items you don’t know what to do with, so you can quickly grab what you need.

And with that, you can be fashionably on-time.

Solution

Secondary Research

Task: To begin building an application concept using a specified design, purpose, and target audience. We will define how these characteristics will play into action as we begin conducting research surrounding competing apps.

COMPETITIVE ANALYSIS

Task: To explore similar domains and analyze the strengths and weaknesses of these applications. This will assist us in implementing potential features later on.

Competitor 1: Polyvore

Polyvore is a fashion-focused mood-board app that allows users to build outfits sets and share it with others. While it is more community-focused than personal, users have the ability to link shopping pages for items that may not be in their possession. They can create visuals that contain many outfit pieces and save them for later use.

Product Successes

Potential Improvements

-Allows users to utilize a “brand” feature.

-Simple moodboard creation process.

-Collages are clear and aesthetically readable.

-The app lacks the ability for users to easily use their own photos.

-Collages to not mimic any sort of human formation, so it may be challenging for some users to visualize outfits on themselves.

-Retailers seem to be prioritized over consumers of the app.

-No access to personal closet.

Competitor 2: Stylebook
